Poetry Forms — Free verse

There is a question as to where poetry ends and prose begins. Free verse is on the borderline. In poetry, line breaks are used to accent and break up the words whereas punctation is used in prose.

Example of Free Verse

Sea Change

The waves pound and roar at the wind's scream,
And white horses thunder on the pebbly beach.
Spume plays in the air
And lightning gleams over storm-tossed waves.
Heaven explodes in light
Booming in a thousand tongues.

The sky's heavy mantle is gashed
And a ruby eye peers through
Stares with finality before the veil falls
And hell is black again.
